Margaret has gained considerable experience in the field of counselling, especially in counselling with regards to traumatic events in people\u2019s lives. These traumatic events include but are not confined to: trauma debriefing, counselling survivors of violent crime, HIV\/aids, armed robbery, hi-jacking, murder, suicide, domestic violence and rape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently self employed in a private counselling practice \u2013 specialising in trauma counselling and debriefing;

Providing in-house training in basic counselling skills and trauma management to corporate clients to meet their specific requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gary has a varied background starting with a technical Avionic trade at South African Airways followed by 16 years in the world of corporate IT. Having grown up in Zimbabwe, lived in England and South Africa, travelled to about 30 countries, including the Middle-east, Australia, New Zealand and sailed around the Caribbean and Mediterranean, Gary is fortunate to have been exposed to many people and finds the cultural differences in them amazing. Seeing how other people deal with their issues has inspired him to help others at home in Cape Town, and in 2005 he completed a Diploma in Counselling & Communication from the College of Applied Psychology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here is an overview of Gary\u2019s experience as a Volunteer Trauma Counsellor with the Community Intervention Centre (Jan \u201905 \u2013 Dec \u201908):
\u2013 Provided free single-session trauma counselling to the general public after suffering a distressing incident such as MVA, shootings, stabbings, domestic violence, addiction, armed robbery, depression, suicide risk and HIV\/AIDS.
\u2013 Mostly brief crisis intervention assisting victims with coping skills and exploring support systems. CIC worked in conjunction with three local Police Stations and two local Hospitals, at times seeing clients at home, in Police cells, hospital wards, ICU or in their Safe House.
\u2013 Member of the \u2018Youth at Risk\u2019 team dealing with youngsters battling with depression, suicide, addiction or domestic issues.
\u2013 Member of the specialised CISD team (in conjunction with the Cape Town Disaster Management team) to deal with major incidents requiring group counselling and debriefing eg bus accidents, traffic pile-up, aircraft hijacking.
\u2013 Member of EXCO 2007\/8 \u2013 to revise the documentation for the induction of new trainees and update the ongoing training of existing members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Currently on a sabbatical, he is not available for Counselling, but is willing to offer referrals to other Counsellors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Established in May 2001, the Community Intervention Centre (CIC) is a level 1 BBBEE non-profit and non-governmental organisation that provide a FREE 24\u2013hour on-site trauma intervention and support service to the Blaauwberg community and surrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They work in full cooperation with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and local hospitals. Their office is based at Tableview SAPS, but also operate on-site or at the other local SAPS Victim Support centres in the Milnerton Police precinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Victim Empowerment Programme:
The Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) aims to support victims and survivors of crime and violence as well as their families, to deal with the impact of the incident, which he\/she has experienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
General Counselling:
A short-term intervention (often limited to one or two sessions), which is appropriate when a person has suffered a traumatic incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
6 Week Personal Growth Training Course:
The objective of this 6-week intensive self-reflective course is to facilitate and encourage trauma worker candidates to intentionally self-reflect and bring to light any undealt with personal issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
12 Week Trauma Training Course:
The CIC Trauma Training Programme assists those new to the field to learn and master the skills and information necessary to provide on-site trauma intervention and support. The programme is part-time and thus manageable for working professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
